To the disbelief of many Americans, the state of Pennsylvania, along with several other states, has shut down many of its parks. "It's hard to image that a state as rich in history as Pennsylvania would abandon these parks," says Linda Katt, one of the volunteers who has taken over the task of operating Brandywine Battlefield State Historic Site, a Revolutionary War battlefield in Chadds Ford, Pa. "These are hallowed sites that need preservation."

STORY OF THE DAY Little Havana Bungalow Restored
This month workers are putting the finishing touches on a 1921 bungalow in Miami's Little Havana. The Hubbard-Alvarez bungalow had been abandoned for years when a developer proposed tearing it down. But the nonprofit Dade Heritage Trust bought the house in 2003 and began restoring it as offices for Citizens for a Better South Florida, which will buy the house later this month.

FROM THE MAGAZINE Civil War Survivor
Ten years ago, Brent Stinar was leafing through Preservation magazine when he saw an ad about a historic house for sale 90 minutes north of Washington, D.C. "State of Maryland seeks resident-curator to restore and maintain historic Jacob Rohrback farmhouse, adjacent to Antietam Battlefield," it read. Intrigued by the accompanying black-and-white photograph and the promise of enough acreage to support a small farm, he decided to drive out and see the place for himself. But Stinar was thoroughly unprepared for what he found.
